Land Birds: Top 5 Photos of the Week

Land birds (tree-dwelling birds, perching birds or songbirds, raptors, and ground-feeding birds) includes many species that spend the majority of their lives in terrestrial environments.

A small gamebird with an orangish face and fine barring throughout. Males and females are similar. Occurs in open grassy areas such as dry grasslands, scrub, and agricultural land. Often found in groups. Call, sometimes given simultaneously by several birds, is a loud repetitive “kateetar-kateetar”. Native to South Asia; introduced to Hawaii where it is common in dry areas on all Hawaiian islands.

Red wattled lapwing

The red-wattled lapwing is an Asian lapwing or large plover, a wader in the family Charadriidae. Like other lapwings they are ground birds that are incapable of perching.

A native of India, the gray francolin is about a foot long. They have distinct rows of brown feathers with a pale face and throat. While both sexes look similar, males may be slightly larger than females. They are common in dry areas and can easily be found near hotel lawns and near roads at dawn and dusk. They have a loud call often heard in the morning.
